The reality is I was working on a new animation for today, but because of a busy family weekend I wound up not having the time to finish it. I had a great weekend though. My wife and I took my oldest to see Toy Story 3 on Saturday. Though, there is one scene in that movie that was downright disturbing to me. I won’t elaborate for those who haven’t seen it, but those who have should know exactly what I’m talking about. Also, the carnival was in town. So we all went there as well. And then went to a Peekaboo’s parents’ pool yesterday to go swimming. The temperature was 109 degrees and 101 degrees in the shade and on top of that Hampton Roads is the humidity capital of the world so that only compounded it further. Nonetheless, it was a fun filled family weekend that I wouldn’t change for the world, but it did detail what was originally planned. Well, poop.

In the meantime, enjoy this comic and I will shoot for the animation on Thursday.

Super Mario Bros. Crossover v1.1 Released

Super Mario Bros. Crossover v1.1 was officially released today and now has an official site as well.

So what’s new with this version? Well… Mega Man now has Rush Coil, Samus Aran now has crouching ability, Simon Belmont gets better jumping ability, Link can now attack in more directions, Mario now gets a weird version where everything plays likes it’s underwater, the game itself has difficulty settings, cheats have been added and of course the addition of Ryu Hayabusa. You can check out all these updates in the video below or just play the game for yourself.

Why There Aren’t More Female Gamers…

“When your father stood up, told me I sucked and then exposed himself on Xbox Live I knew I was going to marry him someday.”

I was pressing the random button in the comic navigation when I finally came across this comic. And it got me thinking… If I was a female, I think the number one thing to turn me off of gaming would be the creepy male gamers. Now, I’m not saying all male gamers are creepy. Uh, case in point. But we’ve all been on Xbox Live and as such have seen some of the least common denominators that lurk on there. You know what I mean?

It’s that stigma that causes a lot of females to avoid what we consider non-casual gaming altogether. I personally don’t think it’s because these games supposedly aren’t geared towards them. A good game is a good game and there’s more than enough variety out there for everyone. No, I think the perception of the people they think game plays a lot into their desire to pursue gaming further.

But then again, I could be completely off. After all, I am one X gene short of really knowing what I’m talking about.

So by now you’ve probably noticed that the blue Dueling Analogs‘ design of the past year and a half is no more. I felt it was the right time for a change and to fix a lot of problems that you, the readers, have been complaining about for very long a while now.

First off, the white text on a dark blue background is no more.

This was the biggest gripe I got from you guys about the old design. You said it was way to hard to read. Personally, I never had a problem with it but that’s me. Still, I feel the colors a calm and professional set.

Second, the design is now optimized for 1280px resolution. It’s pretty standard that most websites are built for 1024px resolution. But +80% of Dueling Analogs‘ audience have a monitor with a resolution greater than or equal to 1280px. So why not design the site with the majority of the readers in mind? Well, I did. But I also took those with a smaller resolution in mind as well. True, if you have a larger monitor you will see the site how it is intended. But if you don’t, the right column will merely become thinner and the logo with change slightly. Resize your browser window if you want to see what I mean. It works for both, just looks slightly better for one.

The comic navigation has changed. The rewind back and forward next buttons are now on the sides for a more logical navigating experience. The email this comic that was in the center has been replaced with a random comic strip button while the email this strip button itself has been moved lower into the new share section of the post.

What is old is new again. When the previous design was implemented the area for the comics was decreased from 725px wide to 671px wide. That meant that the comics that were wider than that had to be shrunk down. In the new design, the comic area has been increased to 750px wide. Which means that the larger versions of the comics will be returning. Already the first 174 comics have had their wider versions returned to the site.

There’s lots of other little things and behind the scenes programming that I implemented as well. But overall from a design point of view, what I have mentioned here are the big ones. I know that the site looks different and a lot of people get nervous when what they know changes. But in the end I think you’ll appreciate the brighter design and cleaner layout. And the fact that text can actually breathe now, as well.

They’re thinking about calling the new Xbox 360 critical failure indicator the Red Dot of Death [source]. I say no. I get that the Red Ring of Death is a play off of the Blue Screen of Death. And that’s fine as the Red Ring of Death sounded cool. It made you feel as if your console was being surrounded by flames and sacrificed upon the alter of the god of system failures. But Red Dot of Death that sounds like some local news story about teens and laser pointers. Now Red Dot of Doom sounds awesome. Like some sort of ominous being of light that drains the very essence of your soul if you ever see it. Kinda like when they opened the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

That’s why I say on to you internet, unite behind the term Red Dot of Doom. Cast aside your former shackles of death and embrace the impending doom. If you see anyone referring to the failure as a Red Dot of Death correct them. Show them the error of their way and enlighten them to the correct terminology. And if that still fails, make an example of them on 4chan.

These are my personal favorite trailer’s from this year’s E3. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are the things that I am most excited about from the convention (some are), but these are just my favorites.
Kirby’s Epic Yarn is so cute and unique it’s just so impressive that this is for the Wii.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is just what it should be. Loving the new retro renaissance that is happening right now in the gaming world.

After such a water downed showing in Mortal Kombat vs. DC this is their “we’re sorry and we learned our lesson” game. I believe them

With all the awesome stuff going on at E3 right now (ie. the Nintendo 3Ds and it’s shitload of awesome games, new Mortal Kombat, Bulletstorm, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Twisted Metal, Portal 2) you would think it would be easy for me to come up with a new idea for a comic. And you would be right, because I did. Unfortunately, coming up with an idea and actually having the time allotted to do so are two different things.

I wish I could talk about what is taking up all my time. But I find that if I actually talk about said projects they never come to fruition. Let’s just say that there’s a lot that’s going on and hopefully I will be able to prove it pretty soon.

So during the interim, let’s just enjoy a classic Dueling Analogs and then weigh in on your opinions about this year’s E3. I’ll start…

Nothing from the Microsoft camp at E3 really excites me. It’s about friggin’ time that Twisted Metal is coming out for the PS3. Nintendo pretty much dominated the show. I really want to get a hold of a Nintendo 3Ds. Game wise: Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Kid Icarus equal awesome. Disappointed that the Wii HD was not announced. I really thought it would be. I like how Mortal Kombat is returning to it’s roots. And Bulletstorm looks frantically sweet.

Two finales: One, the pre-order for The Mr. Masters (poster) ends today. So if you want to say $2 and guarantee to own one, now is your chance. And two, this is the final The Mr. Masters comic. I wasn’t originally going to run this one, but as I mentioned in the previous post I have been rather sick lately (missed half a week of my real world job) and this gave me a little extra time to recuperate and was relevant as well.

So instead of just running just The Mr. Masters‘ equivalents from Mega Man 5, I decided to select some of the ones I really liked out of the remaining 48 and put them here in the final comic of the series. I specifically didn’t display a bunch of my favorites because I wanted to leave some good content for those who order the poster. But realistically, there’s 80 Mr. Masters on the poster and I’ve only shown 40 in it’s five comic series. That means half of the content will still be brand new. Personally, I think that’s a lot.

Sorry for the delay. I’m pretty sick right now and this was the first time today I actually felt I could muster up something. I would have ran another classic comic, but I really don’t prefer to do that and I’m not too keen on the lazy comments I receive from it either. So I created this.

Seriously. I understand that new pokémon are added into each game for variety. But how do they explain it? Someone just wasn’t doing their job and just counting every fourth species they encountered. Or they were high.

Don’t forget that the Mr. Masters (poster) pre-order is still running until Monday and that the grab bag offer is still going on while supplies last. We’re already out of XL, XXL, and XXXL and medium is almost gone too.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World vs. The Game

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a timed exclusive for the PlayStation Network. How long of a time is still unclear, but it will inevitably be available for Xbox Live.

The game is basically a Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari Street Gangs River City Ransom style beat-um-up with the options of playing as either Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Kim Pine or Stephen Stills. You can level up, buy enhancements for your characters and up to four can play at the same time, but there is currently no online support (hopefully that changes).

Now, if you’ve ever read a Scott Pilgrim book or even glanced at a back cover then you know that this is definitely the way a Scott Pilgrim game should look. Old school gameplay, sprites, chiptune music and brawling. Plus, having Paul Robertson, one of the coolest sprite artists ever, handling the art direction makes this just that much more awesome. Definitely looking forward to downloading this when it comes available for the PlayStation 3 this August.

Another Castle: The Joke

I’ve been creating Dueling Analogs for almost five years now. And during that time I have, of course, done the Super Mario Bros.‘ “princess is in another castle” joke. If fact, today’s comic marks the fifth sixth (Thanks, Fenrir!) time I’ve made that joke.

Now a lot of people may not be proud of such a feat. And I might as well feel a bit of shame if I had told the exact same joke six times. Fortunately, each of one my “princess is in another castle” jokes starts with a similar premise and is taken in a completely new direction.

Don’t believe me? It starts with sexual frustration, moves on to courtroom drama, then flashes back to Arthurian times, to heroism, obesity and finally ends at complete apathy.

I guess what I’m trying to sum up is just because you use the same premise, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re making the same joke.

Grand Theftendo is now Retro City Rampage

Years ago, I first saw the screen caps for an 8-bit version of Grand Theft Auto III called Grand Theftendo. Theoretically it was GTA for the NES. But unfortunately all updates about it just ceased and it seemed as if the project was cancelled. Wrong!

Grand Theftendo Retro City Rampage is now being released by VBlank Entertainment for WiiWare this fall. And since VBlank Entertainment is not Rockstar it’s safe to assume that it’s a completely original story. Very safe to assume.
