Video Games Make a Killing Even in Bleak Season

The economy is in the doldrums, and shoppers everywhere are cutting back on spending. Yet in stores and Web outlets selling video games, times have rarely been better.

Thanks to the spread of video games to older demographics, to the mature product cycle of all three leading game consoles, and to the incredible popularity of the sector-changing Nintendo Wii, the video game industry is bucking the recession.

From harried housewives getting in some exercise on the Wii Fit to teeny-boppers playing along with bands on music games, or hardcore gamers enjoying the spectacularly immersive effects of titles like Gears of War 2, the industry is offering something for everyone at relatively modest prices.

That assertion may surprise those who think that splashing out 50 dollars or more per game and hundreds of dollars for a console is a bit excessive.

Rumor: Monster Hunter 3 Could Go Multi-platform

When Monster Hunter 3 was revealed to the public, most were shocked that the game would appear on a Nintendo system.

Rather than releasing on the PS3, Capcom had decided to go with the Wii to release the game. However, if the latest rumor is true, Monster Hunter 3 might not be a Wii exclusive after all.

A rough translation of a blurb from a foreign gaming magazine is as follows: "The decision of Monster Hunter 3’s Wii-exclusivity is not yet final."

This bit of information comes from a Capcom representative. The thing is, as was mentioned, the line from the representative is a rough translation.

Sony to Cut Manufacturing Plants and 8,000 Electronics Jobs

Sony has announced plans to cut 8,000 electronics jobs - 5% of the division - as well as shutting 10% of its manufacturing sites.

The company said the jobs would be cut by April 2010 but did not say in which countries the staff would go. Sony said it had been trying to reduce production because of the downturn but warned it still had to do more.

The news came as Japan drastically raised its estimate of the amount its economy shrank from July to September. The Cabinet Office said the economy had shrunk at an annual rate of 1.8% in the quarter, down from its previous estimate of 0.4%.

Investment cut

Sony aims to generate cost savings of about 100bn yen ($1.1bn; £730m) by the end of the next financial year. It will cut its investment in electronic operations by 30% and shut down about 10% of its 57 production facilities.

"The number sounds big, but this staff reduction won’t be enough," said Katsuhiko Mori, a fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments.

"Sony doesn’t have any core businesses that generate stable profits - the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company."

Video Game Piracy: The Widening Problem and How to Stop It

iTWire of Australia thinks they have found the best way to limit video game piracy. Upon checking the top sellers list, they found it was dominated by Wii games such as Mario Kart, Wii Fit and Wii Play… all of which come with some kind of peripheral.

So they feel that as the games require the hardware, then people are less inclined to pirate the games. Moreover, special editions can still make a difference with nice little gifts inside such as key rings, extra content discs, etc.

To quote: See a trend? Sure the top three are games for the Wii, but more importantly, four of the top 5 have some sort of peripheral hardware associated with the game.

COD4: Part II Modern Warfare 2: World At War Again Announced

In its seemingly never-ending mission to confuse gamers, Activision has recently confirmed that Infinity Ward is hard at work on the sequel to its 2007 best seller, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, simply titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Why the number 4 has apparently been dropped is unknown, although we can speculate it’s because Activision doesn’t like the idea of having two numbers in one game title.

To make matters worse, some sites and gamers are propagating that this game should be called Call of Duty 6, even though there wasn’t technically a Call of Duty 5, just Call of Duty: World at War, which really is the fifth entry into the franchise but isn’t labeled as such.

Midway has 50 Days to Rack Up US $150 Million or it’s Game Over

Big trouble. Big big trouble. Midway Games is in hot water now, trying to figure out how they can earn US $150 million in just 50 days.

If they fail, they’ll have to declare bankruptcy, and it’s game over. After getting sold for for a mere pittance, the publisher remains in such bad shape that they’re facing bankruptcy in just a little over two months.

A file from the US Securities and Exchange Commission tells us that Midway is really grimacing in financial pain right now. So far, they’ve got US $10.3 million in the bank, so that’s US $140 million to go.

No word yet on what Midway is planning to do with the situation.
