I guess when you’re known for being a virtuosic fabricator of fabulous tech-mods in cyberspace, you’re kids aren’t going to let you slide by with a wriggling animatronic hand from Target for Halloween. Here, the day before flying out to deliver the keynote at the California Steampunk Convention, Jake von Slatt presented this Wizard of Oz themed Halloween display at his house outside of Boston.

Repurpose Halloween Loot as a Candy Calendar [DIY]

Halloween weekend is nearly over and many of you likely have a stash of sugary loot left over. What can you do with a pile of candy besides going on a bender of confectionery goodness that will end with you crashed out on the couch watching reruns of WKPR in Cincinnati? Brenda from the parenting blog Alphamom came up with a kid friendly and fun way to dispense the candy. By combining tissue paper and paper condiment cups, she was able to make an Advent style calendar where each tissue-paper-guarded cup holds a delicious treat. You may not have children whose sugar intake you are trying to limit like Brenda or even have a particular winter holiday to count down to, but her solution for metering out the candy is undeniably cute.

Who Says Nintendogs are Only on the DS? [Cosdogs]

Gizmodo is gonna think I am copying their homework but, seriously, you gotta see these two dogs dressed as a Wii and a Wiimote for Halloween, and these poor sons of bitches (literally) do not look happy about it. Looks like they are having less fun playing Nintendo hardware than this guy did.

In deference to our sister site for this great get, you can see the second one on the link.

LED Costume

I give you my pick for geekiest costume I’ve seen this year: a giant LED costume. Yes, I agree with you that it should have real LEDs on the inside:)

Trick or Treat More Efficiently with Halloween Candy Code [Friday Fun]

Give your kids a piece of chalk before they head out to demand candy from strangers, and they can let other kids know which houses are worth visiting and which have angry dogs or cheek-pinching personal space invaders with the Halloween Candy Code. For anyone obsessed with John Hodgman or Mad Men, you’ll instantly recognize this as a whimsical derivation of “hobo code” or “hobo sign.” Laugh now, but see if you aren’t warning away other tramps with pictographs carved in trees after a jealous spouse runs you off for trying to cage more than a square meal. Where else might sub-literate messages scrawled near a threshold be useful?

It’s the Great Gaming Pumpkins [Halloween]

Halloween is upon on. Man that was quick. Last night I suddenly realized that we had forgotten to carve our pumpkin this year. That realization was followed by Tristan and I doing a tour of the local grocery stores on the hunt for large carving gourds. We finally found a GIANT pumpkin, brought it home and craved a Cyclops face into its flattest surface. That’s right, nothing gaming related. But that didn’t stop tons of you from carving up pumpkins in tribute to your favorite games.

Hit up the jump for a gallery of the ones that have been sent in to us so far.

Spooky (and free) audio effects

X-Orcism Plugin

CDM points out this free Halloween themed effect for VST/AU compatible audio software. You can download the plugin from Solid State Logic’s site (free reg required). Nice to see the neighbors aren’t the only ones giving out free treats.

It’s basically a pitch-shift + vibrato + wind noise + eco/reverb combo … which means it’s fun -
