Hands-on shots of Creative’s Vado HD 720p pocket camcorder

Creative’s recently unleashed Vado HD 720p pocket camcorder isn’t dramatically different (design wise, anyway) than its predecessor, but it’s obviously what’s tucked inside that counts. Still, we have to admire the subtle but meaningful updates that Creative has applied here, and while beauty will strike everyone differently, we personally like the direction the Vado HD has taken. For a few more looks, saunter on down to the read link.

TiVo Netflix hands-on

TiVo was nice enough to hit us with the Netflix-enabling Fall Service Update a little early, and the going’s been pretty good — this is probably our favorite Netflix streaming implementation yet. Although it’s not as flashy of an experience as the Xbox 360’s Netflix implementation, it’s faster to start streaming, and to our eyes it looks a lot better — the 360’s output is really dark, while the TiVo looks bright and crisp. On top of that, we’ve never been able to get our 360 to hit more than two bars when playing HD-capable content, while the TiVo instantly spooled up and started streaming full-quality 720p video — and it can drop back to SD during network slowdowns and then pop up to HD again, while the 360 is stuck at whatever res it started the movie at.

Nokia E63 hands-on

While the N97 was free to fondle, the slightly less exciting E63 was decidedly bolted to a table, so we had to take what angles we could get. The phone is basically a cheap-o version of the E71: Nokia figured it had a good thing going on in that QWERTY candybar, and decided to spread the love at a lower price point, with a slightly thicker, plastic handset. The good news is that no matter what you do to cheapen the phone, the E63 comes from good stock, and is really a compelling form factor. The slight bump in thickness is negligible, and while the cheaper materials are easily distinguished from the luxury feel of the E71, the phone by no means feels cheap.

Nokia N97 hands-on part II: the reckoning

We promise to stop slobbering all over this handset in a month or eight, but the N97 is certainly the new hotness, so we hope you’ll excuse us for returning for another go and getting some more in-depth hands-on-ness. Unfortunately, while the phone is certainly stunning in many facets, and probably the greatest S60 device to date, we’re not sure it’s the Storm / G1 / iPhone / anything killer we all might’ve been hoping for. If you’d rather just concentrate on the sexy, peep our video hands-on and wait six months or so for Nokia to work the kinks out, otherwise join us after the break for some hard-to-swallow, totally subjective, prototype-based opinion.

Apple In-Ear Headphones hands-on, ears-on, and impressions

We’ve been wanting to get some extended face time with Apple’s In-Ear Headphones (yes, that’s the product name) ever since we spied them at the company’s Fall “Let’s Rock” event. Of course, they didn’t exactly hit the scene on time, and we were starting to get suspicious. Tack on the rumor they wouldn’t be compatible with iPhones, and we felt downright indignant. Imagine our surprise, then, at the discovery that they not only sound really, really good (warm lows and crisp highs, a distinct lack of that modern, pushy mid-range), but they do work with the iPhone (the 3G we’ve got here, at least).

Nokia’s Z-Wave Home Control Center hands-on and video

Since hearing about Nokia’s foray into the world of home automation, our curiosity has been seriously piqued. Thankfully, our girl-on-the-scene Drita has captured video of the new software / hardware combo in action on the Nokia World show floor. It looks like a fully decked out system is going to run you a hefty fee (given all the components required), but can you put a price on the extreme laziness it will enable? We didn’t think so. Check out the thrilling video out after the break!

Nanovision’s MIMO UM-710 mini display gets tested, proves addictive

While we were led to believe that Nanovision’s MIMO line of diminutive LCDs would be stuck in South Korea for the foreseeable future, it appears that a trio of ‘em are now shipping to North America. While not christened with any SideShow labeling, this 7-inch UM-710 mini monitor was designed to operate alongside your laptop and / or desktop monitor in order to give you more space for those little-but-necessary applications. Critics at Technabob were quite fond of the 800 x 480 display, noting that it was perfectly clear, incredibly useful and darn near impossible to live without after a solid hour of usage.

Nokia N97 hands-on

If you’re like us, you haven’t seen nearly enough of the N97 yet… right? Well fear not, faithful reader, as our intrepid comrade from Engadget Spanish, Drita, has nabbed a tasty hands-on with the phone in question. As you can tell from the pics, it’s not quite as thin as its nearest competitors, but fairly sleek and stylish all the same (metal bezel and all), and that QWERTY keyboard looks practically edible. We’re salivating at the thought of getting one to thoroughly put through its paces, but until then, let’s all just sit back and soak in the handsome gallery below.

Update:
Make sure you check out Drita’s video hands-on as well!

MacBook Air Rev. B mini-review

We’ve spent a bit of quality time with the new MacBook Air, and while there’s little on the surface to denote a change, Apple did quite a bit under the hood to turn this into a serious laptop — of sorts. Full disclosure: we (meaning a certain Paul Miller, specifically) have been using a Rev. A MacBook Air for the better part of a year as a primary machine, to very much frustration, so we had some pretty big bones to pick with whatever revision Apple might toss into our laps. Luckily, our fears were unfounded; read on for all the gory, romantic details.
