Nintendo DSi Sees Big Boost In Japan [Simple 2000: The Japanese Hardware Chart]

Sales of the Nintendo DSi on its home turf were way up this week after dipping into “just awesome enough” territory the week prior. Nintendo moved another 126K, according to Media Create.

Wii was up. PSP was down. PS3 was down. Nintendo DS Lite was down. Xbox 360 was down. PS2 was up. Look, that’s all the color you’re gonna get, guys. Sorry. Writing about hardware and software sales all day is mind-numbing. I’m going to go look at pictures of puppies or something while you enjoy this week’s hardware chart.

• Nintendo DSi - 126,648
• Wii - 56,702
• PSP - 54,782
• PlayStation 3 - 30,309
• Nintendo DS - 12,096
• Xbox 360 - 9,988
• PlayStation 2 - 5,743

Professor Layton Gets Japanese Sales Chart Tenure [Simple 2000: The Japanese Software Chart]

Level 5’s newest portable puzzle-venture retains the top spot on the charts this week, with Professor Layton fending off the Dragon Ball Z crew — and everyone else. Even the Japanese release of Fallout 3.

Bethesda Softworks’ post-apocalytpic role-playing game did land in the top ten, though, along with the highly rated-by-Famitsu 428: Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de for the Wii. That’s about as exciting as the week got, sadly. But, hey, Pokémon Platinum crossed the two million sold mark and Wii Music is still holding on! You go, Wii Music.

The top thirty best-sellers in Japan from Dec. 1 to 7 follow.

01. Professor Layton and The Final Time Journey (DS) - 87,000 / 434,000
02.

Erotic Game Makes Next-Gen Hands Free A Scary Reality [Maximum Risky]

No, that’s not a kitchen appliance. That’s the SOM, a hands free you-know-what machine. Ironically named game developer Overflow has synchronized the “dream” device with its erotic game Cross Days.

The game’s website points out the the machine moves in real time to corresponding on screen motions during “climax scenes.” The SOM connects to the computer via USB. As the Cross Days website suggests, “Install SOM and experience a next-gen reality!” Oh dear.

More pictures after the jump of the Lady’s piston machine SOM and a more realistic hand-version. Not work safe — or anywhere else, really.

The manufacturer says it uses a material called “septon,” which is used in medical devices.

This Is How You Make PSP Boobs Bounced [Updated] [Maximum Risky]

Thought only Tecmo’s Team Ninja were the masters of in-game boob physics? Ha! Japanese game developers AC Gateway and Gadgetsoft seem to have invested a lot of energy into perfecting boob physics.

In new PSP title Masquerade Maid Guy: Bouncing Battle Royale, the devs used what they’re calling the Super Tayunizm Engine — basically, a boob-bounce-making game engine. There are tech demos after in both 2D and 3D below. Enlightening.

“Field/Buttole” [Only In Japan]

English is hard. But, really, if you are a Japanese developer making video games, there is one English word you should know how to spell: “Battle.”

As game site Insert Credit points out, there are three super common English words in Japanese gaming: “Start,” “Fight” and “Battle.” All three are used in Japanese as English loan words — but obviously the writing and pronunciation are different.

Global A, the developer behind RPG Chumon Shiyouze! Oretachi no Sekai for the PSP, mucked up the spelling of “battle”…for the better, we think. Instead of writing “Field/Battle” we get “Field/Buttole.” (This is where good localization comes in!)

Battle? Battle is boring. But Buttole? Oh ho ho, now we’re cooking with gas.

Japanese Saints Row 2 TV Ads Are… Interesting [Clips]

Here’s a TV spot for THQ’s Saints Row 2, which was just released in Japan. (It’s, well, interesting. Like PaRappa on crank or something.) The pun-filled ad focuses on the game’s customization with the male character telling the female character that she had been a man until yesterday — a claim she denies!

There’s another ad after the jump as well.

Weekly PS3 Sales Double In Japan, DSi Holds Top Spot [Simple 2000: The Japanese Hardware Chart]

The Nintendo DSi is still the best-selling platform in Japan, with its camera-less predecessor similarly selling in the tens of thousands. But Sony’s PlayStation 3 saw the biggest gains this week, thanks to Konami.

The developer-publisher’s World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009 sold over 168,000 copies in Japan last week, helping to double PS3 hardware sales to nearly 35,000 units. A pretty big improvement from its October lull.

Wii sales were also way up, by more than 14,000 units.

The full hardware sales tally from Nov. 24 to 30 was:

• Nintendo DSi - 87,185
• PSP - 55,090
• Wii - 49,848
• PlayStation 3 - 34,978
• Nintendo DS - 26,851
• Xbox 360 - 11,423
• PlayStation 2 - 5,628

Some Japanese People Impulsively Bought Wii Fit [Nintendo]

We’re approaching the end of the year. Time to look back at all that we’ve done and all that we didn’t plan on doing. Internet trend site Goo has a poll up that asks about this year’s impulsive shopping. Here’s the question:

This year, what did you carelessly or accidentally purchase?

1. Salted sweets
2. Unprocessed cameral
3. Wii Fit
4. Lotteria’s Zeppin Cheese Burger

The only other game related entry from those polled? Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G at number 12. (In non-gaming news, the iPhone was number 14.)
