God of War 3 Debut Trailer

As promised, tonight’s Spike Video Game Awards showed off the debut trailer for God of War 3. Though the trailer gives us very little game footage to look at (only about 20 seconds), it should give us an idea of what to expect. Check out the trailer above, and let us know if you shout expletives like David Jaffe, and check out the reaction blog from our resident Kratos superfan Matt Leone to see his own theories on where this game is taking the series.

Dante’s Inferno Game Confirmed at Spike VGAs

Last month we heard unconfirmed rumors of a game based on Dante’s Inferno apparently in the works from Electronic Arts. Today at the Spike Video Game Awards, the first trailer for that title was revealed.

Actress Kim Kardashian helpfully introduced the game by informing viewers that it is “based on a book.” The trailer itself provided a bit more info:

“In 1300, Dante Alighieri wrote The Divine Comedy. Part one, called Dante’s Inferno described Hell in nine circles.

Gears 2 “Combustible Map Pack” Coming Tonight

Gears of War 2

A trailer shown at tonight’s Spike Video Game Awards revealed that the “Combustible” map pack for Gears of War 2 will be coming to Xbox Live tonight at midnight, Pacific time. The map pack includes three maps: “Flood” with rising immulsion levels, branching paths in “Gold Rush,” and the explosive “Fuel Station.” Soon after, Gears 2 (unsurprisingly) won Best Shooter and Best Xbox 360 Game. We didn’t hear a price mentioned for the map pack, but we’ll all know how much it will cost soon enough. We’ll update with the trailer soon, so you can see it for yourself in case you missed it.

Soulja Boy says his Xbox 360 Game is coming in 2009

Soulja BoyAnother bizarre chapter in Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em’s dalliances with game design begins. Not content with his role as the greatest videogame critic of all time, the rapper revealed earlier this week that his own videogame is planned for release some time next year.

“Soulja Boy video game is coming for Xbox 360 in 2009,” Soulja Boy said to Complex (via Xbox360Fanboy). He went on to recount the harrowing tale of how his game came to be. What you are about to see is true and accurate, and we promise we didn’t make any of this up.

“After I put the Xbox 360 challenge up on the Internet, it was over all these video game sites,” Soulja Boy said.

Infamous Mario Bros. Clone coming to Nintendo DS

Great Giana SistersEver heard of The Great Giana Sisters? Possibly you haven’t, which wouldn’t be surprising since Nintendo did everything they could to smother it back in 1987. The game was a blatant Super Mario Bros. clone, and was blocked from release under threat of Nintendo’s legal arm. But now, in a surprising turn of events, Game|Life reports a remake will be released next June in Europe… for the Nintendo DS, no less.

The remake is being developed by Spellbound Studios, where Armin Gessert, the game’s original programmer, now resides. It’ll feature updated graphics and remixes of the game’s original music, which will no doubt be wasted on the majority of players who never got to try the original game out in the first place.

Party, Quick Match coming to SOCOM: Confrontation

SOCOM: Confrontation

It seems to have been glossed over in this crowded holiday season, but if you’re still playing SOCOM: Confrontation, you’ll be pleased to learn that a couple of convenient new features will be added to the game in the forthcoming 1.30 patch: Quick Match functionality and a party system.

As explained on the official SOCOM: Confrontation blog (via Joystiq), the two new systems are interlocked. You’ll be able to select Quick Match from the main menu, which will then take you to the party screen, where you can invite your friends. Once your party is set, you can then find other parties to quickly join in three game types: 16×16 Ranked, 16×16 Unranked, and 16×16 Respawn.

EA Ends Plans for New Vancouver Studio

Electronic ArtsElectronic Arts has cancelled plans to build a new 20,000-square-foot development studio in Vancouver due to slow holiday sales and an increasingly gloomy global economy, reports The Globe and Mail.

The announcement doesn’t seem to directly affect the two studios EA already has in Vancouver — Black Box and EA Canada — although it was intended to provide extra space to accommodate their Vancouver staff. Planning for the studio began last year, but EA has stated they’ve already leased the space the studio was to be built in to a new tenant.

“These are challenging times, they’re uncertain times for our industry and across the board,” EA spokesman Colin Macrae said.

GH World Tour Guitar Bundle Owners Getting 5 Free Songs

Guitar Hero World Tour

Guitar Hero World Tour may have added a few more instruments to the franchise, but it can, if someone so chooses, still be purchased in a guitar bundle alone. And Activision, for some reason, has decided to reward such customers. Joystiq picked up on a new promotional offer, where Activision will give anyone who purchases the Complete Guitar Game bundle for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 — before December 31 — five free downloadable songs.

The offer hasn’t actually gone live yet, as right now there’s only a message stating to “come back soon to redeem your five free songs.” A few questions, then, remain unanswered.
