RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 8900 has arrived on Rogers

Right now, the vast majority of RIM talk is centered around its touchscreen offering, but those firmly committed to its more traditional kit haven’t forgotten for a second about the next-generation BlackBerry Curve. We knew the 8900 was destined for a life on Rogers, but we had no idea we’d feel this compelled to head north once it launched. The handset boasts a 2.4-inch, light-sensing 480 x 360 resolution display, 512MHz processor, quad-band EDGE / WiFi, 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS, a microSDHC card slot, removable 1,400mAh battery and Bluetooth 2.0; sadly, the omission of any 3G support isn’t in error, and we’re certain that’ll be a deal-breaker for some.

Video: eccentric Peek demonstration highlights the pain of 2-year contracts

Most of the world probably missed this stunt because of how short lived it really was (thanks, NYPD!), but at any rate, we found it wacky enough to pass along. Back in late November, a few Peek faithful donned prisoner uniforms and walked around chained to BlackBerry Storms on the day Verizon launched the touchscreen RIM device. Naturally, Verizon officials were none too pleased, and everyone involved in the protest was asked to leave shortly after they arrived. Thanks to the wonders of YouTube (vid’s after the break), you’ll be able to watch it over, and over, and over again. Death to contracts…

BlackBerry Storm OTA update now available on Verizon

We’re certain it has been a painstaking weekend for you Storm-owning Mac users, but the long-awaited OTA download for the first firmware update is finally available. For those somewhat confused, the update we covered on Friday was exclusively available via the Windows-only RIM Desktop Manager application; now, Storm owners can suck down v4.7.0.75 without a liaison. Early reports are pretty positive, with jkOnTheRun noting that the troublesome lag that came bundled with the handset was now all but history. The 14MB download (plus installation) is said to take around 20 to 30 minutes, so fire yours up and let us know how things turn out.

Verizon posts its first BlackBerry Storm firmware update

Lo and behold, Verizon’s taken a break from releasing low-end Nokias for just long enough to officially release its first Storm update — which just happens to be the same one that’s been floating around on the interwebs for a few days now, 4.7.0.75. Anyone unwilling or unable to connect to their PC to nab the update can wait until 9:30 Pacific this evening, when it’s said that an over-the-air version of the same software will hit the airwaves. Best of luck, upgraders!

Update: We’ve given the update a shot, and Mac users should be warned that there doesn’t seem to be a good way of shoehorning the goods on to the phone at this point — probably better off to wait for the OTA.

Smartphone numbers are in: iPhone sales exceed Windows Mobile sales for first time

Gartner’s latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we’d say it’s a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokia maintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3.

BlackBerry Storm vs. knife blade… Fight!

Some things are best tested by others. Say, for example, the guy who first drank from a cow’s mammary organ or the equally daring person who took the point from the knife above to the display of his new BlackBerry Storm. In either case, the results are tasty. See for yourself in the video after the break.

[Thanks, Mike]

RIM lowers third quarter outlook, touts Storm sales

RIM no doubt got a boost of confidence from AvianResearch’s sales numbers a few days ago, but it looks to be in a bit of a gloomier mood today, as it has been forced to slightly lower its third quarter profit and revenue outlook. Apparently, instead of the previously forecast revenue of $2.95 to $3.10 billion, RIM now says it’s expecting to rake in just $2.75 to $2.78 billion, with its adjusted earnings now expected to be 0.81 to $0.83 per share, and not $0.89 to $0.97 per share, as previously forecast. According to RIM’s Jim Balsillie, the company is laying most of the blame on “product launch timing, general economic conditions and foreign exchange volatility,” but it has nothing but good things to say about the Storm, which it says has “experienced particularly strong momentum in recent weeks.” It further added that the Storm’s first day of sales drew a record number of new net subscribers for the company, and that it also managed to pull in a record number of weekly net subscribers additions in the last week of the third quarter.

BlackBerry Storm update leaks to the masses

Okay, remember that bit about waiting for a wide release? Yeah, screw that noise. Firmware 4.7.0.75 for the BlackBerry Storm has drizzled out onto the interwebs, and initial reports from intrepid updaters seem to be generally positive. We can’t verify the authenticity of this sucker, but if you were counting down the minutes until RIM got around to patching up issues and killing some lag, 75 might be a good start. Good luck, friends.

[Thanks, Erik]

Rogers selling the BlackBerry Curve 8900? UPDATE: Yes indeed

Word on the street is that people have suddenly (and rather unexpectedly) started to be able to buy the Curve 8900 on Rogers for $179.99 on a three-year contract with support for the carrier’s Talkspot UMA service. Why this wasn’t heavily advertised leading up to the release, we don’t know — folks seem to be red-hot for this release — but at any rate, you should be able to stroll into your local shop in the next few days and pick this sucker up. That eternal question comes up yet again: Curve, Bold, or Storm?

Update: Game on — according to Boy Genius, the Curve is now listed in Rogers’ internal database and retail stores are starting to get stocks.

Two BlackBerry Storm updates imminent, handset unlocked for use on T-Mobile

Here on Thanksgiving Eve, we’ve got two juicy Storm tidbits sure to make your Turkey Day that much more interesting. For starters, one fellow over on HoFo has purportedly unlocked his touchscreen BlackBerry for use on T-Mobile’s GSM network. Hot, right? The process involved sourcing a SIM unlock code from VZW, then updating the phone with software intended for the Bold. If you’re not confused yet, you’ll also need a dash of Elvish magic and a bit of luck, but you should know that you can’t tap into T-Mob’s 2G voice network and Verizon’s 3G data network at the same time.
