Screw Consumers, Actual Bands Prefer Rock Band [Rock Band]

You may like Guitar Hero. That’s fine. But while you’re enjoying Activision’s soulless take on Rock N’ Roll, know that artists prefer Rock Band.

Or, at least, that’s what Rock Band owners Viacom reckon. So take that with a grain of salt.

Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman:

There’s a strong music orientation to our company; many of our networks are ideal vehicles to promote the game, and you’ll see more and more of that as we move forward.

We also have the opportunity to attract talent to [Rock Band] in a way that our competitors have greater difficulty doing.

The fact Guitar Hero have a Metallica game coming early next year kinda negates that point, but then, the Rock Band v Guitar Hero stoush has never been about accuracy.

The Rock Band Stage Kit In Action [Rock Band]

What, you thought it was a joke product? Nope. It’s real. Depressingly real. Avoid the banal chit-chat and skip to the 2:00 mark (highly recommended) to see it kick in.

Rock Band Country: Here Are Your Hotly-Anticipated Details [Rock Band]

Is Harmonix’s decision to try and court the C&W market in a game called Rock Band a stupid one? Probably! Nevertheless, they’re taking a swing at it with the “Going Country” track pack.

Consisting of five tracks, it’ll be out on December 18, and will feature tracks by Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert and the Dixie Chicks. Pricing is fairly standard, at $2/160MS for a song or $8.50/680MS for all five.

Cambridge, Mass. – December 8, 2008 – Harmonix and MTV Games announced today that Rock Band® is set to give fans a taste of country music for the first time with the addition of the “Going Country” 5-pack to the Rock Band® Music Store catalog of downloadable content.

Guitar Hero Inspiring British Kids to Take Up Real Music [Survey Says]

A survey by UK music charity Youth Music suggests that rhythm and singing games are driving them to take up real musical pursuits.

It’s yet another study on the subject, and it may not sound like an overwhelming number — 19 percent of youngsters now playing instruments or signing said a game inspired them to try it. But that amounts to 2.5 million Brit kids. And that’s a pretty good figure for a phenomenon roughly three years old.

More than half of the 12 million UK children between the ages of 3 and 18 play musical games, the report found. Andrew Missingham, a music industry expert who carried out the study, said there is a direct line between that kind of gameplay and moving into more serious pursuits, helping to establish some “transferable musical skills, and even the development of performance confidence.”

“This research for the first time shows conclusively that young people are being inspired to make their own music by games that first piqued their interest,” he said.

As a social game, Rock Band and Guitar Hero and SingStar, where failing on notes is in a low-pressure, among-friends environment, I can see how it would help break down fear of failure or stage fright later on.

But left unsaid is how committed to musical pursuits these kids remain.

Ion Universal Cymbal Pack gives Rock Band drummers more stuff to hit

So we still don’t know what that blasted mystery port is for on the back of the Rock Band 2 drum kit, but this one sure made our hearts beat a little faster. If you’ll recall, it was Ion that dished out the premium drum kit earlier this summer, and this gives you the option to add in another cymbal if two just aren’t enough. Too bad you can snag an actual cymbal on clearance for less than the $49.99 Ion’s asking for this one; at any rate, she ships next week if you’re interested.

Lips patch brings microphone compatibility to Rock Band

Our super sophisticated estimation process has it that a whole 2.89 of ya even care that Microsoft’s Lips microphone won’t work with Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but we’re about to make just south of three Earthlings a lot happier. Harmonix and MTV Games have been working with Microsoft to provide compatibility (via a patch) with Rock Band 2, though there’s no definite date to latch on to. Alright Activision, the bar has been set — you up to the challenge?

Nyko’s Metal Pedal adds weight to your gaming drum kits

Nyko's Metal Pedal adds weight to your gaming drum kits

Dry your eyes, drummer. We feel your sense of loss at the news that Rock Band 2 may not be getting its promised second kick pedal after all, ruling out proper reenactments of Lars’ two-foot prowess (without a little modding). Now at least you can improve the quality of that one kicker you do have, replacing it with something a little more weighty. Nyko’s aptly-named Metal Pedal, a bargain at $20, works with both Rock Band games as well as Guitar Hero: World Tour on all platforms, and is made of real metal to give a more authentic heft. No, nothing will feel quite like the real thing, but it’s surely better than that cracked hunk of plastic you’ve been meaning to send back to Harmonix for months.

Rock Band Gets…Gwen Stefani? [Rock Band]

OK, not just Gwen Stefani. No Doubt. Though these days, when I think “No Doubt”, I think “Gwen Stefani career advancement vehicle”, so excuse my conclusion-jumping.

According to No Doubt’s official website, 13 of the 15 tracks from the band’s singles collection will be made available for Rock Band, both as a full album or individual tracks. They’re due on December 9. Wonder which two songs didn’t make the cut?
