Rumor: Kojima Working On First-Person Shooter, Calls On Infinity Ward [Hideo Kojima]

According to an anonymous poster on the popular but perennially sketchy 4chan board, Metal Gear Solid series director Hideo Kojima visited the offices of Infinity Ward today. Why? “To learn” about first-person shooters, allegedly.

The purported Infinity Warder wrote — with accompanying photo “proof” of the visit — that Kojima is working on something in the “FPS genre so he came to us to learn and take details from the team.” It wouldn’t be the first time that Kojima was rumored to have called upon the Call of Duty developer’s FPS know-how.

EGM (and 1UP, natch) ran unconfirmed reports that Kojima was “on tour,” visiting FPS experts like Infinity Ward and Killzone developer Guerrilla Games for some knowledge sharing.

Kojima has also dropped by Call of Duty: World At War developer Treyarch, we hear, a strong hint that the head of Kojima Productions wants to put third-person cameras behind him.

Could this be what “a next Metal Gear is?” Or is Kojima working on another beloved property, Policenauts or Snatcher, possibly?

WSJ: Is Disney Going After EA? [Mergers]

Last month, the Wall Street Journal offered Disney the following sage advice: “Buy Electronic Arts.” According to the WSJ’s “Heard on the Street” column, Disney might be doing just that.

The WSJ reported yesterday that Disney’s CFO Tom Staggs may be looking at someone exactly like EA for a future acquisition. Staggs didn’t come right out and say it, reports the Motley Fool, instead hinting that a “strategic and attractive” purchase would be “a possibility.”

It’s not close to confirmation, but when Wall Street Journal editors ask “Is Walt Disney Co. preparing a bid for Electronic Arts?” they’re probably not asking for their health.

With EA’s stock down more than 25% since the original suggestion by WSJ, even if EA’s not looking “attractive” it’s looking a hell of a lot like more of a bargain.

Guitar Hero Metallica Partial Tracklist, “Other Bands” Announced? [Rumor]

Haven’t seen this myself, so it’s rumour for now, but a number of people claiming to have their hands on the latest Game Informer are also claiming to have details on Guitar Hero: Metallica.

Additions to the existing GH formula are said to include a new drums difficulty “for people with a splitter and two kick pedals”, “Pop-Up Video” style tracks, the ability to use “Metallica drum sounds” on your drum fill and the availability of new guitar and bass “tones”, as used by Metallica’s James Hetfield and Slayer’s Tom Araya.

Yup. Slayer’s Tom Araya. Which brings us to the most exciting news of the lot. Like Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, GH: Metallica will feature songs by bands who have worked with/toured with Metallica.

Grand Theft Auto: The Movie One Of 2008’s Best Unused Screenplays [Update] [Rumor]

Every year, film executives get together and nominate the best scripts they came across that didn’t make it to the big screen by the end of the year. Among 2008’s list of 250 screenplays? GTA: The Movie.

UPDATE - Nothing to see here, folks. It’s a pending remake of 1977’s Grand Theft Auto. Explains why the name Roger Corman was attached! Silly us for thinking that plot had more in common with Rockstar’s gang-riddled crime games than it did with a Ron Howard movie.

Least, it is according to film site Latino Review. So take this with a pinch of salt.

If this list - known as the Black List - checks out, the script has been written by Jason Dean Hall, one of Hollywood’s hot young things, with a ton of promise but an empty IMDB listing.

EGM En Español Is Dead [Magazines]

The Spanish language print version of EGM has seen its last issue, according to the magazine’s editorial director Adrián Carbajal. He cites the uncertainty over the English language version’s fate as the cause for closure.

Carbajal writes that concerns about the ability of Ziff Davis’ gaming mag to continue beyond 2008 led the Mexican licensor of the EGM brand to shutter the mag. That means EGM fans south of the border will have to settle for the December 2008 issue, the one with Watchmen gracing the cover, as the mag’s “adios” issue.

While we know the English language version will continue at least through its January issue, Ziff’s CEO Jason Young sounds less confident in its ability to continue through the rest of the year.

It was reported last night that UGO was interested in buying the 1UP network of sites, but not the print version of EGM, another potential sign of weakness for the two-decade old mag.

Thanks to Josué Hernandez for the heads up.

Ex-Team Ninja and Brawl Staff Working On TMNT Fighter For Wii [Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles]

According to reports from the newest issue of Nintendo Power, Ubisoft will be publishing a new four-player fighting game based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But it’s who’s developing the title that’s interesting.

Supposedly, the team tasked with creating this 2.5D brawler is comprised of former Team Ninja staffers and folks who worked on Super Smash Bros. Brawl. GoNintendo is reporting that the Wii-bound fighter is scheduled for a late 2009 release and will feature online play said to outperform Brawl.

An Ubisoft rep is quoted as saying that the game, while licensed, is not directly tied to a movie or television show, but will be a standalone effort.

Best Buy rumored to be hoarding Wiis for holiday push

It’s hard to say if this rumor is true, but it’s not behavior that Best Buy has avoided in the past. In fact, we vividly remember this exact same scenario happening in late 2006 — the difference? That was the Wii’s launch year. This is two years later. Two. Years. Later. Oh, and it’s totally a futile effort, considering that Wally World sold through “tens of thousands” in about four milliseconds. Seriously people, there’s a new Elmo to wage holiday war on, you have no business scrapping for a Wii 25 months after it hit US shores.*

*Image above is assumed to be Photoshopped, as we cannot find a single human to confirm ever seeing that many Wii consoles for sale in one location.

Zune Phone or Xbox Zune Announcement Coming At CES? [Rumor]

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry may have spilled some beans about Microsoft’s upcoming CES showing.

According to the analyst, and Wired’s Gadget Lab seems to buy it, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will be announcing a Zune-style mobile device during his keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas next month.

The device is said to include “motion enhancement features” like an accelerometer, a large, multimedia-friendly screen and a keyboard.

What’s that mean for gaming? Well if nothing else, I’m sure we will see an explosion of portable gaming hit this new Zune device, perhaps even that long awaited Live Anywhere software.

UGO To Buy 1UP? [Rumor]

According to a report on Joystiq, the UGO Entertainment Network - and yes, they still exist - are in talks with Ziff Davis with an eye towards purchasing the 1UP network.

These talks are in a “very advanced” stage.

The report claims that UGO plans to allow 1UP’s websites (ie 1UP.com, Gamevideos) to operate independently, maintaining their own “separate entities with their own branding”. Sadly for EGM fans, it’s also claimed that UGO have no interest in Electronic Gaming Monthly, meaning that if this deal does take place, the end is nigh for the long-running magazine.

Apple rumored to be turning iTunes into a DRM-free music store UPDATE: Not anytime soon

We can’t count the number of times we’ve heard from one random source or another that Apple was about to pull the trigger on a subscription-based / 100% DRM-free music service, and given how those have worked out in the past, we’d highly recommend taking this one with a huge dose of salt. French site ElectronLibre has it that Apple will finally offer up all of its music in DRM-free form starting as early as tomorrow, specifically calling out Sony, Universal and Warner as outfits who would join the protection-free cause. Should this happen, it would obviously be a dream come true for ole Steve, but we’re still left to wonder what would happen to bitrates, prices and (potentially most important) all other iTMS content.
